Amberley Long is an artist currently based in Somerset, where she sculpts with stone, clay, cement and materials found from the earth, in hope to communicate the natural happenings of a sensory atmosphere and the incident of gravity within each piece.

Enthused by rock formations and the interconnectedness of the unyielding landscape with beings, she explores the diverse perceptions of natural forms and the tactility within them. Natural materials have so much story, and her hope is to see the vision of this story in the stone and exploit it, to expose the beauty.

Focusing purely on a performative environment with the sense of touch, the concept of energy within space is an extremely important part of Amberley’s work. Finding and feeling your own story when perceiving her pieces of work are the reason she sculpts today.

Her curiosity of the Paleolithic (early Stone Age) time and the historical culture with human behaviour as well as the environment plays a huge part in her work. Amberley focuses on only using hand carving tools to achieve her desired textures, highlighting the importance to converse with the material. Honouring the beauty of the natural curves of each material is what sets the intention at the beginning of each sculpture, allowing the stone to dominate, not the tools.
